During my time as a personal trainer, I have seen a fair number of workout-related injuries. While I am not yet licensed to provide care for injured athletes I was able to take a preventative approach by hosting a mobility and body mechanics clinic at a local CrossFit gym. This workshop had two aims – to teach foundational movements to people unfamiliar with working out and to offer a basic mobility screening for those interested in participating in CrossFit. The curriculum included a dynamic warm-up, range of motion exercises for each major joint, and a functional movement screening for squats, lunges, presses, and deadlifts. The second half of the clinic was focused on movement prerequisites for more advanced lifts such as the hamstring length required to deadlift safely, the abdominal bracing needed to safely do back squats, and the shoulder mobility required to do bench press. The end goal of the clinic was to help people assess their readiness to participate in working out either alone or at a CrossFit class and provide resources for referrals if needed.
